Territories of Ice

Spitsbergen, 2023. A glacier front spans the entire horizon, crossed by rust-red sediment lines. A storm front stands above it, yet the water below remains motionless. The photograph was taken shortly before the weather changed.

Spitsbergen, 2023. In the first light, a tall wall of ice rises above dark water. Rust-red veins of sediment cross the deep blue, while a bank of cloud casts hard shadows on the front. Compact and fractured ice alternate in clearly separated zones.

Lago Argentino, Patagonia, 2026. An iceberg with a dark rock core drifts before the jagged front of a glacier. The blue of compressed ice contrasts with the black of the trapped boulder. The iceberg visibly carries what the glacier loosened from the rock.

Lago Argentino, Patagonia, 2026. A large iceberg lies in grey lake water beneath a restless sky, with a snowy mountain range behind it. Compressed glacial ice glows deep blue, revealing layers formed over centuries. Clouds move above it in the same direction as the drifting ice.

Spitsbergen, 2023. What was below is now above. The brown bands are sediments picked up by the glacier along its journey. They reveal an iceberg made of many layers and periods of time.

Iceland, 2024. A massive glacier advances to the lagoon. Heavy, metallic light emphasises its front, while loose floes drift in the water. Form and weather interlock above the glacier.

Lago Argentino, Patagonia, 2026. A single blue block of ice stands in dark water. Its form is reduced to a pure silhouette, without surroundings or a sense of scale. The ice seems to glow from within.

Spitsbergen, 2023. A broken block of ice drifts in calm water. Pressure has compressed the ice over a long period until it became transparent. Trapped air bubbles and cracks trace its formation.

Torres del Paine, Patagonia, 2026. A glacier advances between layered rock faces to the lake. Snow-covered ridges rise above the fractured ice. Blue core ice appears where the glacier breaks.

Lago Argentino, Patagonia, 2026. A glacier front breaks into individual towers and jagged peaks. Blue and white alternate with the density of the ice. The first broken floes drift in the water before the wall.

Iceland, 2024. The glacier appears as horizontal layers. Lines overlap in an almost abstract composition. Different shades of blue mark flow zones frozen into stillness.

Arctic Ocean, 2023. Seen from above, a ship lies amid broken ice fields. It is the only work in the series with a human trace. The narrow hull between the floes makes the scale of the ice measurable.
