Northern Reaches asks why we are drawn to landscapes that have no need of us. These places do not reflect us; they put us in perspective. The photographs respond only with what is there: rock, ice, water and light. Each place takes effort to reach, on foot through the highlands or by ship to the edge of the pack ice. The panoramic format holds the horizontal sweep of coast, valley, ice and highland in a single, quiet line.
Rhyolite
Landmannalaugar, Iceland, 2023. Ochre rhyolite mountains rise in successive ridges. Snowfields lie in the hollows, adding pale accents to the mineral surfaces. The layered ridges open up the depth of the image.
Braided Rivers
Icelandic Highlands, 2023. Branching rivers cut through black lava plains. Green moss and dark rock lie in clearly defined zones between the channels. From above, the waterways read as an organically formed network of lines.
Last Light
Lofoten, Norway, 2024. Dark rocks rise from turquoise water. Warm evening light lies over sea and sky at the horizon. In the backlight, the coastline almost dissolves.
First Green
Icelandic Highlands, 2023. Green moss covers black lava, and a small lake reflects the sky. Low light brings out the mountain slopes in warm tones, separating the young green from the dark volcanic ground.
The Colony
Spitsbergen, 2023. A walrus colony rests heavily at the edge of the ice. The jagged coastal mountains are doubled in the calm water, forming an almost symmetrical horizon. The animals are the only irregular accent on an otherwise geometric surface.
Tidewater
A glacier in Spitsbergen, 2023. A tall ice front meets dark water, with mountain peaks rising into deep clouds behind it. The smooth, motionless water makes the scale of the ice wall measurable.
